We do so much in our everyday lives to take care of our environment like recycling and using sustainable products. The body wash you use could be doing more damage than you think! Sorting through a long list of unknown ingredients isn’t on my to-do list at the store. But knowing what to look for can help. First, skip sulphates. The most common sulphate based ingredients in skincare are sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth ether sulphate (SLES). Sulphates function as surfactants, which means they attract water and break down oil and debris. This may work to “cleanse” your skin but they are also known to irritate and strip the skin of essential oils. With continued use, the sulphates can lead to dry, brittle skin and could even increase acne.
Parabens are a perservative used to create a longer shelf life and stable skincare and beauty product. Long lasting products are great but parabens penetrate your skin and enter your body tissues. The most commonly used parabens are Butylparaben, Methylparaben and Propylparaben.
Here are some reasons why you should skip these ingredients in the future:
- Eco-Friendly
The two primary sources of sulphates are petroleum and palm oil. I don’t need to tell you that these industries are TERRIBLE for the planet. Palm oil production is a leading driver of deforestation. In countries around the world, forests and nutrient rich land are being cleared to make way for oil palm plantations, not caring about any fauna or flora that they might be destroying. Both of these industries release large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere which is one of the main causes of Global Warming.

2. Animal Testing
Because Sulphates are known to cause irritation to our skin, products that use these ingredients are often tested on animals to judge the level of irritation they will induce in humans. This all means that animals suffer so that you don’t have to. A way to combat this is to use products with no sulphates or parabens. At Scented Sack we firstly only use suppliers that don’t do animal testing and secondly we NEVER test on animals as we don’t have to. We only use natural and skin safe ingredients so we know what the outcome will be.
3. Save The Ocean
After your shower, the grey water that washes down the drain enters the ground water and eventually ends up in the oceans. Parabens have been found in the tissue of marine animals such as Dolphins and Polar bears. Sulphates cause the PH of the water to increase and this also leads to the death of the coral reef which is not just a home to thousands of marine animals but also protect the shore from storms and Tsunami’s.
